Ginkgo Biloba for Stroke Recovery
What is the link between a ginkgo tree, one of the oldest tree species on earth, and stroke patients? According to this article from the American Heart Association’s news site, taking components of the dried herb ginkgo biloba intravenously has been shown to have positive effects on stroke recovery. In a Chinese study, people with ischemic (clot-caused) stroke were treated with ginkgo biloba for 14 days following their stroke. The results showed better early cognitive recovery compared to those not treated with it.
It is important to note that ginkgo has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It has been used as a supplement and in stroke treatment due to its possible antioxidant benefits, which may protect nerve cells from damage. It is not FDA approved, as is the case with many supplements in the USA, and there is not yet enough evidence to definitively state whether it should be approved for medicinal use. However, this research sounds promising and exciting.
